Charles II, Guinea, 1667, third bust right, rev. four crowned shields cruciform (MCE 61; S.3342), about fine / good fine Estimate £ 200-250 provenance HMS Association, Sotheby, 28 January 1970, lot 1 (£52-0-0- with sale receipt) HMS Association, the flagship of Sir Cloudesley Shovell, was lost off the Scilly Isles in 1707. Shovell survived the wreck only to be washed ashore and fall foul of the islanders who robbed him of a valuable ring and then suffocated him burying his body in an unmarked grave. Some years later the body and ring were recovered and he was interred with great ceremony in Westminster Abbey. Coins and artefacts from the wreck were recovered in the 1960´´s and sold at auction in a well publicised sale in 1970.
