Anglo-Saxon Penny, Mercia, Coenwulf (796-821), Group 1 (Offa transitional issues), Penny, 1.20g, London, Ludoman, cenvvlf between two beaded lines each extending from central crooks, Mercian uncial m above with ornaments, rex below with ornaments, rev. lvdoman in two lines between ornamented lunettes (N.341; S.912A), much of edge of coin lost, otherwise pleasing tone, extremely fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 1,500-2,500 provenance Found Rushden, Northants, 2006. Recorded with the Fitzwilliam Museum (EMC 2006.0239) and BNJ Coin Register, 2007, 254. This type dates from the earliest period of Coenwulf´´s reign when the coinage styles of Offa were being continued. These coins are assigned to London as Canterbury was outside Mercian control at this time due to the revolt of Eadberht Praen. This coin is the only example to this type by this moneyer recorded in the SCBI and with the Fitzwilliam EMC.
