George III, Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, gold prize medal by Thomas Pingo, laureate head right, signedt.pingo.f on truncation, rev. praemia lavdi, Athena standing, holding spear and palm, her owl to left, shield with Gorgon face to right, d.m. granby mag. gen. ord. mdcclxv in exergue, 37mm. (BHM.93), a few hairlines, extremely fine, very rare Estimate £ 600-800 John Manners (1721-70), eldest son of the third Duke of Rutland, was M.P for Grantham and later for Cambridge, Colonel of the ´´Leicester Blues´´, served with distinction throughout the Seven Years War, and was appointed Member of the Privy Council (1760), Master General of the Ordnance (1763), and Commander in Chief of the Army (1766). As Governor of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, he presented prize medals in gold and silver to Gentlemen Cadets who distinguished themselves in the examinations in 1765.
