Bartolommeo Cepola of Verona , Doctor of Law and Consistorial Advocate (fl.1477), cast uniface portrait medal by Bartolommeo Bellano, BARTHOLOMMEVS CEPOL V.I.D.A.C., robed bust left wearing mortar (Armand II, 73, 17; Hill, Corpus, 541), a fine contemporary cast, trace of mount at top, attractive medium brown patina. Estimate £ 800-1,200 Provenance Sotheby´s, 5 October 1989, lot 209 Spink, An Important Collection of Renaissance and Baroque Medals, 21 May 1996, lot 176 One of only two medals accepted by Hill as modelled by Bartolommeo Bellano (c.1434-1496/7), a sculptor and architect, who worked in Florence and Padua and was Donatello´s celebrated pupil.. The attribution is questioned by V. Krahn (Bartolommeo Bellano, Munich, 1988, p.161) Hill records three examples of this medal, for which no reverse is recorded.
