Naval General Service 1793-1840, two clasps, Gut of Gibraltar 12 July 1801, Martinique (George Sleator.), good very fine Estimate £ 2,200-2,400 George Sleator is listed on both the Message and Douglas-Morris rolls as Able Seaman in H.M.S. Pompee with entitlement for the ´´Gut of Gibraltar 12 July 1801´´ clasp only. The Pompee took part in the first unsuccessful attack on French Rear Admiral Durand Linois´´ squadron, 6.7.1801, and as a consequence was so badly damaged that she was forced to return to Gibraltar, unable to take any further part in the action. Men, including Sleator, from the Pompee served in other ships compliments for the successful action six days later. Provenance: Glendining February 1909, where the medal appeared as a two clasp medal with ´´Martinique´´. Sleator´´s medal appears entirely as issued, with the Martinique clasp probably a later claim.
