Naval General Service 1793-1840, one clasp, Algiers (F.D. Hutcheson, Midshipman.), minor edge nicks, good very fine Estimate £ 1,200-1,400 Francis Deane Hutcheson served as Midshipman in H.M.S. Impregnable when the combined English and Dutch fleets attacked the heavily fortified town of Algiers, 27.8.1816. H.M.S. Impregnable suffered extensive damage to her mast and yards during this action. Captain Francis Deane Hutcheson entered the Royal Navy 13.10.1813; served in H.M.S. America (Captain Josias Rowley) for the unsuccessful attack upon Leghorn, the occupation of Santa Maria, the attack on enemy forts in the Gulf of Spezia, and at the reduction of Genoa and its dependencies; whilst serving in H.M.S. Undaunted in 1815, he assisted at the capture of a convoy at Barletta and at the taking of the Tremiti islands; after service in H.M.S. Impregnable at Algiers, he was appointed as Lieutenant into H.M.S. Pyramus (Captain Francis Newcombe), on the West India Station, 19.1.1822; further appointments on the Mediterranean Station followed before being promoted to the command the Pelican (sloop), 9.8.1828; in October of the latter year Hutcheson co-operated with the French Army in the reduction of the Morea Castle; employed with the Coast Guard, 1832-36; Captain 23.11.1841.
