Naval General Service 1793-1840, one clasp, Northumberland 22 May 1812 (E.J. Piper. Midshipman.), very fine Estimate £ 3,000-3,500 Edmund John Piper served as Midshipman in H.M.S. Northumberland, who combined with H.M.S. Growler successfully destroyed the French ships Ariane, Andromaque and Mameluke off the Ile de Groix, Lorient, 22.5.1812. Lieutenant Edmund John Piper joined the Royal Navy as First Class Volunteer, 5.4.1806, and was posted for service in H.M.S. Belleisle (Captain Wm. Hargood); present at the destruction of L´´ Impetueux off Cape Henry, 14.9.1806; posted as Midshipman to the Northumberland (Captain Hargood and subsequently Captain Hon. Henry Hotham), July 1807; Piper lost a leg in an attack upon a large convoy in the Adriatic, 1809; took part in the above mentioned action against the Ariane, Andromaque and the Mameluke during which H.M.S. Northumberland suffered 5 killed and 28 wounded; posted as a Supernumerary to H.M.S. Minden (Captain A. Skene), for service in the Cape of Good Hope Station, Summer 1812; promoted Lieutenant H.M.S. Harpy (Captain Henderson Bain), 21.11.1812; invalided home 1813, and in consideration of his wound he received a pecuniary grant from the Patriotic Fund, and was awarded, 28.5.1816, a pension of £91 and 5 shillings per annum. Both the Message and Douglas-Morris rolls give recipient´´s name as ´´Edward J. Piper´´, this is at variance with O´´Byrne. Provenance: Glendining, April 1950 Glendining, December 1953.
