Naval General Service 1793-1840, one clasp, Spartan 3 May 1810 (Joseph Roginson.), minor edge nicks, good very fine Estimate £ 3,500-4,000 Joseph Roginson served as Able Seaman in H.M.S. Spartan when she single handedly bested the Franco-Neopolitan frigate Ceres, the corvette Fama, the brig Sparviere, the cutter Achille and seven gun boats in a two hour hard fought action, 3.5.1810. Marshal Murat witnessed the action from the shore in disbelief, as the Spartan outgunned 95 to 38 guns routed his squadron and towed away his personal yacht, the Sparviere as a prize.
