LOWNDES, W.A. Report Containing an Essay for the Amendment of the Silver Coins. London, 1695. Octavo, (18.75 x 11cm); pp. 160. Neatly bound in later calf-backed marbled boards, a little rubbed at extremities. A fine copy of this important and scarce work. Estimate £ 320-350 The best known work of William Lowndes (1652-1724) as Secretary of the Treasury (appointed to the post in 1695). With a view to the recoinage of 1696, he was requested to undertake an investigation into the state of the currency, the results of which were published in this work . The Essay prompted many responses, including the most famous one by John Locke, entitled « Further considerations concerning raising the value of money ».
