(BHM 418; Eimer 877), good extremely fine, toned, rare, with original wooden box, one side split Estimate £ 80-100 Clifford´´s Tower is all that remains of York´´s mediaeval castle. On 23 April 1684 an explosion in the tower reduced the castle to a ruin. The local citizens had frequently proposed that the castle, known as ´´The Mince Pie´´, should be demolished, and the explosion was probably not an accident. The garrison had not only evacuated, but had removed their belongings, just before the explosion occurred. The medal was issued jointly by Mr Cattle, a Perfumer of Blake Street, York, and Matthew Young, Jeweller and Coin Dealer, Ludgate Hill, London. It was sold to subscribers in a box with a brief description of the Tower.
