Greece, Kingdom, Medal for the Defence of Missolonghi, a Fine-Quality Collector´s Copy, 35mm, bronze, very fine Estimate £ 40-50 Missolonghi was a small fishing town in western Greece, but it was also an important Philhellenic supply centre since the early days of the insurrection. Three events were instrumental in making Missolonghi the most famous Greek town of the War of Independence: the unsuccessful Turkish siege of 1822-23, the death in the town of Lord Byron in April 1824, and its second siege and fall on the 23rd April 1826, which resulted in the destruction of the town and the massacre of the heroic defenders.
