A Great War Group of Three to Sergeant A. Storie, Highland Light Infantry, Killed in Action, 28.4.1917 1914 Star (11163 Sjt. A. Storie. 2/High: L.I.); British War and Victory Medals (11163 Sjt. A. Storie. High. L.I.), extremely fine (3) Estimate £ 140-180 11163 Sergeant Archibald Storie, born Leith, Midlothian; served during the Great War with the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry on the Western Front from 14.8.1914; three months later only 32 (including Storie) of the original battalion were still capable of active service in France; Storie was killed in action 28.4.1917; on the latter date the 2nd Battalion were in action during the battle of Arleux, as part of the Arras offensive, the Battalion War Diary entry gives, ´´3.15am the battalion moved into position for attack in order of companies... 4.25am zero hour, enemy barrage came down within one minute of our own which was very irregular. Several casualties on the wire, which was badly cut. "A" Coy had to cut through, "B" Coy found one gap only. Heavy machine gun fire came from Oppy Wood. Front companies in the barrage at the support trench. Touch with the 17th Middlesex lost... Heavy sniping, shelling from the wood and shelling of the new position commenced in the afternoon. Two counter attacks were delivered in the morning and afternoon but both were successfully beaten off. There was much sniping from the roofs of houses in Oppy. Casualties: officers killed 4, wounded 18, missing 1, other ranks killed 38, wounded 180, missing 42´´; Storie is buried in the Orchard Dump Cemetery, Arleux-En-Gohelle.
