A Scarce Great War Casualty Group of Three to Trumpeter S. Maybank, 7th Dragoon Guards, Killed in Action, 8.8.1918 1914 Star (1468 Tptr. S. Maybank. 7/D.Gds.); British War and Victory Medals (D-1468 Pte. S. Maybank. 7-D. Gds.), extremely fine, all with respective original named card boxes of issue Estimate £ 250-300 1468 Trumpter Sidney Maybank, born Stepney, London; served during the Great War with the 7th Dragoon Guards on the Western Front from 13.10.1914; he was killed in action 8.8.1918; on the latter date the Regiment charged at Boves, ´´At 9.15pm the Brigade marched through Amiens to their position of assembly, two and a half miles north of Boves, and by 4am on the 8th August the Regiment were saddled up and ready to move forward. The ground to be crossed consisted of a succession of deep valleys divided by steep ridges with narrow crests which were in view of the enemy and under heavy artillery and heavy machine gun fire. The Regiment advanced with "A" Squadron (Major Chapell) on the right and "D" Squadron (Captain Friend) on the left. Both Squadron´´s occupied their first objective one capturing 1 officer, 24 men, 2 heavy guns and 4 machine guns and the other 14 prisoners, 6 machine guns, an abandoned battery and large quantities of equipment. The action of "A" Squadron forced a large number of Germans to retire across the open and the Colonel ordered the Regimental Scouts to charge, closely supported by a troop of "C" Squadron (Captain Shrubb). By noon the first objective had been taken. The 17th Lancers and Inniskillings supported by the Regiment then advanced to the second objective. During this engagment... 10 officers and 32 men were wounded... 4 men and 29 horse were killed. The Regiment were awarded 2 D.S.O.´´s, 2 M.C.´´s, 1 D.C.M. and 12 M.M.´´s for their part in this highly successful mounted attack´´ (Short History of the (Princess Royal´´s) Dragoon Guards 1688-1922, refers); Maybank is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
