A Great War Group of Three to Corporal H. Ross, Seaforth Highlanders, Killed in Action, 11.3.1915 1914 Star (597 Pte. H. Ross. 1/4 Sea. Highrs.); British War and Victory Medals (597 Pte. H. Ross. Seaforth.), nearly extremely fine, with Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque, ´Hugh Ross´ Estimate £ 180-220 597 Corporal Hugh Ross served during the Great War with the 4th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders on the Western Front from 7.11.1914; he was killed in action 11.3.1915; on the latter date the 4th Battalion were heavily involved in the battle of Neuve Chapelle, the Battalion War Diary gives, ´´6am orders received to renew attack on Bois de Biez... Very heavy hostile fire with little artillery support and no infantry support on left makes progress difficult... Casualties during early part of advance were heavy: 2 officers killed, 4 wounded, 140 other ranks.´´ The battalion carried on the attack in conjunction with the 9th Gurkhas in a series of three rushes to the edge of the woods, here they remained until 6pm, until being eventually relieved by the 1st Battalion Highland Light Infantry at 2am the following day, having suffered horrendous losses - as Lieutenant C. Tennant 4th Seaforth´´s describes, ´´With my head well down in the mud and my pack in front of it I had a look round to see how the boys were getting on and I only realised when I saw how many of them had been stopped on the way what a hot fire we had come through´´; Ross is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
