A Great War Group of Three to Private E. Pocock, Manchester Regiment, Killed in Action, 20.10.1914 1914 Star, with copy Bar (8826 Pte. E. Pocock. 2/Manch:R.); British War and Victory Medals (8826 Pte. E. Pocock. Manch.R.), good very fine or better (3) Estimate £ 160-200 8826 Private Edward Pocock (formerly 9698 Rifle Brigade), born Blewbury, Didcot, 1885; served during the Great War with the 2nd Battalion Manchester Regiment on the Western Front from 11.9.1914; he was killed in action 20.10.1914; during October the 2nd Battalion took part in the 1st battle of Ypres, the advance on Richbourg L ´´Avoue began on the 12th and after meeting heavy German resistance the battalion finally reached Les Trois Maisons on the 20th; the Battalion War Diary entry for the latter date gives, ´´We were ordered to hold the line until Illies should be cleared by the Third Division. About 9am the enemy advanced against our front left flank. Heavy fighting ensued comprising of heavy fire action and two gallant bayonet charges by platoons of "A" company under Captain A.G. Tillard and 2nd Lieutenant G. Dixon. Fighting continued to dusk when we withdrew to our support trenches covering Lorges. The men behaved with the greatest gallantry despite the loss of their officers... Casualties: officers wounded 3, missing 3.... other ranks killed 6, wounded 112 and 69 missing´´; Pocock is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
