A Great War Group of Three to Sergeant G. Craig, 18th Hussars, Killed in Action, 13.5.1915 1914 Star, with Bar (3842 L. Sjt. G. Craig. 18/Hrs.); British War and Victory Medals (3842 Sjt. G. Craig. 18-Hrs.), good very fine (3) Estimate £ 200-240 3842 Sergeant George Craig, born Northwich, Cheshire; served during the Great War with the 18th Hussars on the Western Front from 15.8.1914; he was killed in action 13.5.1915, the 18th Hussars War Diary entry for the latter date gives the following, ´´in trenches at 3.30am the enemy opened a very heavy shell fire on the front trenches held by the 2nd Cavalry Brigade, that position held by the 18th Hussars being particularly battered. Considerable lengths of trenches on the left of 18th Hussars were demolished by cross fire from heavy howitzers. Casualties became very heavy. All communication was cut off by the levelling of the trenches and the incessant fire of the guns and the machine guns..... three out of four Troop Sergeants were killed..... the bombardment of the 18th Hussars trenches was of such intensity that a black pall hung over them for long periods from 3.30am to 10am while heavy intermittent shelling continued until dark. The noise was deafening, the place a veritable inferno... The following were casualties: officers 2 killed, 6 wounded; other ranks 19 killed, 103 wounded, 24 missing´´; Craig is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
