Three: Driver G.F.W. Murphy, "L" Battery Royal Horse Artillery 1914 Star, with Bar (49149 Dvr: G.F.W. Murphy. R.H.A.); British War and Victory Medals (49149 Gnr. G.F. [sic] Murphy. R.A.), good very fine (3) Estimate £ 140-180 49149 Driver George Frederick William Murphy, born Bermondsey, London, 1889; joined Royal Horse Artillery November 1907; prior to the outbreak of the Great War Murphy served in the soon to be famous "L" Battery, being placed on Army Reserve in February 1914, before being recalled for service with the same battery with the declaration of war; he served with the 7th Brigade "L" Battery Royal Horse Artillery on the Western Front from 15.8.1914 and may have been one of the members of the battery to have engaged three German batteries at Nery (1.9.1914), when three of "L" Battery´´s number were awarded the Victoria Cross for there gallant conduct; Murphy transferred to "R" Battery in 1916.
