Young, born in the Parish of St. Giles, Edinburgh; served during the Great War on the Western Front initially with the 2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders before transferring for service with the 8th (Ross-shire Buffs); he was killed in action 28.7.1918; in July 1918 the 1st American Division attempted to take the village of Buzancy, the assault failed and the 15th Scottish Division, including the 8th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders, was moved in to attempt another attack; the seven day assault began on the 21st, with the 8th Battalion War Diary offering the following detail of the culmination of the attack on the 28th, ´´12.20pm barrage opens, 12.30pm zero hour, companies move forward to attack, 12.45pm 1st objective taken, 1pm 2nd objective taken, 1.15pm 3rd objective taken ... 4.30pm Battalion forced to withdraw, units on Brigade flanks had been held up and consequently the enemy had been enabled to work round behind the village and chateau, necessitating our men fighting their way out... prisoners taken 7 officers and 240 other ranks... at zero hour the leading company moved forward close to barrage and took chateau and grounds. 2nd and 3rd companies followed close on lead company but experienced considerable resistance from isolated strong points, chiefly a nest of machine gunners in a house in NE corner of village. This garrison resisted until flamewerfer squad set the building on fire enabling our men to rush the position. Another hostile post of machine guns and snipers held out in a building next to the church until the RE section exploded a heavy charge in the building... in trying to effect an escape from the NW gate of the chateau it was found that a hostile machine gun team had worked forward on the flank and taken a position within 15 yards of the gate. The man in charge of the gun was shot and the rest of the team were scattered by our bombs from inside the walls thrown by us. This enabled the party to withdraw successfully to original positions although heavy machine gun fire from both flanks inflicted severe casualties´´; the Battalion suffered 2 officers killed and 5 wounded, 34 other ranks killed and 34 wounded on the last day of the assault; Young is buried in the Buzancy Miltary Cemetery, Aisne, France.
