Republic, AR Denarius, M. Aemilius Scaurus and Pub. Plautius Hypsaeus (62 BC), King Aretas of Nabathea kneeling right and proffering branch beside camel right, above m.scavr aed cvr, ex sc, rev. Jupiter in quadriga left, hypsaevs aed cvr above, captvm behind, (cf. Cr. 422/1b; Syd. 913), exceptionally well centred and full obverse, reverse slightly off centre, extremely fine Estimate £ 160-200 This issue is an early instance of a moneyer trumpeting his own achievements. M. Aemilius had been governor of Syria and put down the incursion of the Arabian Nabatheans led by King Aretas. Aretas surrendered and was forced to pay 300 Talents to Pompey, who shared an aedileship with him in 58 BC.
