Auction: 8004 - An Important Collection of Renaissance Medals & Plaquettes
Lot: 26

Moderno (late 15th century) Saint Sebastian, rectangular bronze plaquette, 69mm. x 48.7mm., extremely fine cast, light brown patina The Saint, pierced by three arrows, stands tied to a Corinthian column. At left a pier is decorated with a figure of Venus and two horsemen. The pier to right is broken at the top, and is decorated with a figure of Mars and an eagle. Again there are no signed versions of this plaquette known, and the attribution is based on similarities with autographed works. As a possible source for the composition, Planiscig indicates a relief of St Sebastian by Caradossa, described by Ambrogio di Leone in his dialogue De Nobilitate Rerum published in Venice in 1525.
