China 1894 Dowagers 18 Candareens - International Registered 1895 (29 June) opened-out envelope originally registered from Chefoo to Athens "Via Alexandria", part paid in cash and bearing 9ca. grey-green cancelled by seal in black and "shang-hai/chine" transit, with France "Chine" 50c. tied by the French c.d.s.; redirected back to Shanghai and finally "return to Russian Man of War ´Aurial Azora´ Yokohama" with a colourful array of transit marks including Alexandria, Suez, superb "réclamations" c.d.s. in blue, bilingual "non réclamé" label and unframed "retour/a l´envoyeur/reclamations" in blue plus other French, Egyptian and Chinese marking, part of Yokohama c.d.s. on Japanese post office slip (removed); some soiling, particularly around edges. A most appealing cover which apparently never reached Greece and showing the internal pre-paid rate as the 9ca. only cover the internal and registered postage. Major Richard Pratt collection.
