Hong Kong Postal History Incoming Mail 1859-63, entire letters to Augustine Heard from India bearing 1a. and 2a. cancelled by Calcutta "B/1" octagon, both with large manuscript "4" rate mark in black ink with Hong Kong type 9 and type 13 (blue) arrival c.d.s. on flap; carried on ´Thebes´ and ´Lightning´; light filing folds. Both entires are from Stenart & Co. and give details of the opium trade and the American Civil War (1863 entire). (2 covers) Estimate HK$ 2,000-2,500 Note: Until 1868 letters to Hong Kong carried by private ship could not be prepaid to the destination. The packet rate at the time was 4a.
