Auction: 7044 - GB Stamps & Postal History
Lot: 1053
Great Britain 1840 Mulready One Penny Letter Sheets A8, used between the Stamp Offices at Middlewich and Chester, the address panel inscribed "O.H.M.S." in manuscript and cancelled by light strike of the black Maltese Cross, the reverse with despatch and arrival datestamps of 12/13 November 1841, the interior with handwritten note stating "I am not aware of having any spoiled Stamps in my possession, I do not know exactly when they are useless, perhaps you will drop me a line on the subject" - a reference to the official instructions regarding ´Stamps´ (the 1d. black, 2d. blue and 1d. red issues) which were damaged, defectively printed or "spoiled" - the strict regulations required that any such stock had to be returned to the G.P.O. for examination; clean and most attractive. A rare endorsement on a Mulready. Photo
