Auction: 7044 - GB Stamps & Postal History
Lot: 1016
Great Britain Postal History 1835 (20 May) entire letter to Dawson Turner (a well known Antiquarian) at the Atheneum Club in Pall Mall, the note inside is short and very formal enquiring whether Mr Turner would be joining him for dinner "on Thursday next at pp6(?) o´clock", the address panel with Freelings signature at lower-left and showing a superb light strike of the very rare ´crowned´ octagonal framed "To be/delivered/Free" in red; fine and extremely attractive. Note: It has been suggested that this was an abuse of the Franking Privilege by Freeling who was the Secretary to the Post Office!!! - however it is quite possible that the ´dinner´ was an official engagement - especially given the style ("My dear Sir... Yrs faithfully") etc. A stunning exhibition item. Photo
