Henry I (1100-1135), Penny, 1.37g, BMC XIV, Pellets in Quatrefoil type, Dorchester, Sween, crowned facing bust holding sceptre to left, star to right, +henricvs re, rev. quatrefoil containing pellets, star in centre, lis in angles, [..]en:on:doreces[..] (N.870; S.1275), a pleasing example with clear portrait and mint signature, very fine Estimate £ 500-700 provenance SCMB 803, Sept, 1985, item E592 Norweb, Spink Auction 45, 13 June 1985, lot 110 Bt. Seaby, 1971 Dorchester is a scarce mint for Henry I with most surviving pennies being of this type. EMC/SCBI lists six Henry I Dorchester coins of which five are type XIV. This coin is a die duplicate of SCBI Reading 213. The colour suggests this is probably ex Bournemouth Hoard, 1901.
