Aethelred II, Penny, 1.19g, Last Short Cross type, London, Aelfsige, diademed bust left, +edelraed rex anglo, rev. cross pattée within inner circle, an inverted s above and an annulet below, a rare sub variety, +elfsig on lvndenei (N.777; S.1154), bold portrait, die flaw on inner circle, a rare variant, good very fine Estimate £ 300-400 Symbols and letters are found in the reverse field of only a few Aethelred II Last Short Cross pennies. These seem to be privy marks associated with mint output for specific clients and are all rare. The inverted S and annulet on this coin is most unsual and a very rare form for a privy mark, with pellets or crosses more commonly used.
