Private E. Dwyer Winning His V.C. at Hill 60 A view of Private E. Dwyer, 1st Battalion, East Surrey Regiment, standing on the parapet of his heavily-shelled trench, throwing grenades at the advancing enemy, signed W.S. Bylityilis, 515mm x 360mm, lithograph, mounted, with the inscription ´Private E. Dwyer, V.C. Hill 60 -20.4.15- 1st. Bn. East Surrey Regiment´ in a glazed frame Estimate £ 600-800 V.C. London Gazette 22.5.1915 No. 10523 Private Edward Dwyer, 1st Battalion, The East Surrey Regiment ´For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty at "Hill 60" on the 20th April 1915. When his trench was heavily attacked by German grenade throwers he climbed on to the parapet, and, although subjected to a hail of bombs at close quarters, succeeded in dispersing the enemy by the effective use of his hand grenades. Private Dwyer displayed great gallantry earlier on this day in leaving his trench, under heavy shell fire, to bandage his wounded comrades.´ 10523 Corporal Edward Dwyer, V.C., born Fulham, Middlesex, 25.11.1895; served with the 1st Battalion, East Surrey Regiment during the Great War, and won his V.C. for the defence of Hill 60, Belgium; later promoted Corporal; killed in action, Guillemont, France, 3.9.1916, and is buried in Flatiron Copse Military Cemetery, France. His Victoria Cross is on display in the Queen´s Royal Surrey Regimental Museum. W.S. Bylityilis is best known for his lithographs of India, and a painting entitled ´Visit India´ by this artist, printed by Baynard Press, was recently sold in Australia, September 2007.
