x Orange Free State Early Letters and Handstamps 1856 (22 Mar.) entire registered from Smithfield to George Home at Bloemfontein, marked "Registered" and with a superb strike of the circular "smithfield/betald" h.s. with date in manuscript; two filing creases, one of which crosses the handstamp, and repaired tear at top, though of good appearance. Photo Estimate £ 400-500 Note: George Home was manager of a general store in Market Square. He was a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity an was secretary of the Sovereignty Club In 1853 his name appeared at the top of petitioners against abandonment of the Orange River Sovereignty and, in the following year, he read out a public address thanking the departing British Garrison for their services During the Republican regime he was co-opted to the Uitvoerende Raad as an unoffical member
