Dominica Early Letters and Handstamps 1801 (8 May) soldier´s entire letter to Dublin from Private Simon Brion, 2nd Battalion 65th Regiment, rated "1" and showing, on reverse, "dominica/may 10 1801" two-line datestamp. Rare. Photo Estimate £ 1,500-1,800 Note: This is one of two such known letters, from a correspondence discovered in 1984; it may well be one of the earliest surviving soldier´´s letters showing the one penny privilege rate from the West Indies. The letter includes, "...when may I expect to be relieved from the unfortunate situation I am in at present. I would not be so pressing but this climate does not agree with me, nor am I able to go through the hardships of a private soldier in this country". provenance: Sugarman, March 1994
