Bermuda 1874 Three Pence Provisionals "three pence" in Roman capitals "three pence" on 1/- green, a very lightly cancelled example placed diagonally inverted on 1875 (14 Dec.) envelope to Newfoundland, showing "hamilton/bermuda" c.d.s. at left and, on reverse, St. John´s arrival d.s. A very rare stamp on cover and believed to be the sole example used at the correct rate. B.P.A. Certificate (1977). Photo Estimate £ 5,000-6,000 Note: The 3d. denomination was produced to meet the rate by Packet to the Maritime Provinces of British North America. The cover has a recipient´s notation at left "The Bishops last". As Bermuda was part of the See of Newfoundland, and Bishop Field was in Bermuda from 1874 until 1876 this notation is thus explained. provenance: Colonel Green Baron Stig Leuhusen, October 2003
