Somaliland 1901-04, The Somaliland Campaigns Four expeditions had to be instituted against the "Mad Mullah" and his followers who were spreading death and destruction against the peaceful Somali. Indian stamps were used on correspondence First Expedition, May - July 1901 1901 (19 July) envelope (with original enclosure) ex the "Thorp" correspondence to Macclesfield, marked "On active service, no stamps available", showing framed "postage due/ annas" (Type IM1; earliest recorded date), circular-framed "T" and London "2d/f.b/b" h.s. with, on reverse, Berbera and Aden (29.7) datestamps; the enclosure is headed "Bothole 8 July 1901" and gives details of the campaign.
