British Honduras, Bank of Poyais, a proof on card for a $1, St. Joseph, 182-, black and white, arms top centre, bank title at left, by order of his highness Gregor, Cazique of Poyais low left. Poyais was a Scottish settlement on the coast of present day Honduras founded by Gregor MacGregor, a colourful hero of the liberation of South America from Spain a few years earlier. It ultimately proofed catastrophic for both investors and settlers, leaving only worthless land grants and bonds as testimony to this ill fated venture, together with approximately five or so one dollar notes of which this is an extremely rare example.
