Henry I (1100-1135), Penny, 1.39g, Type VIII, London, Sperling, bust left crowned and with diadem, sceptre before, +henrirex,, rev. cross pattée with annulet in centre, annulet within ring in angles, +spe[..]l[..]nlvn (N.864; S.1269), an exceptional portrait piece, test cut at one o´clock, striking crack at six o´clock, usual legend weaknesses, good very fine Estimate £ 3,500-4,500 Type VIII is the rarest of all Henry I pennies and are rarely found with such a strong obverse. The recorded corpus for this type (SCBI/EMC) is 20 coins, of which five are from the London mint, with one by Sperling. This recently found coin adds a further example to this.
