Lot: 530

Aethelstan (924-939), Penny, 1.62g, Bust Crowned type, Winchester, moneyer Aethelm, crowned bust right breaking inner circle, +ædelstan rex, rev. small cross pattée within inner circle, an additional cross above, +ædelm mo vvinei (N.675; S.1095), bold portrait, slightly creased, verdigris spots, very fine, rare Estimate £ 1,500-1,800 This is an unrecorded example of a Winchester BC penny having been in the same family for many decades. It notably uses the aethelstan rex obverse legend unlike most Winchester BC pennies that use rex tot brit. The addition of an extra cross in the reverse field is a feature of Aethelstan´s Winchester coins and this is the first of Aethelm with the cross at 12 o´clock. SCBI records two BC pennies by this moneyer, both in the British Museum.
