Charles I, pattern Unite, 9.92g, in silver, by Nicholas Briot, 1630, m.m. flower on obverse, St. George and the dragon on reverse, bare bust of king left, with flowing hair and lace collar all within inner circle, carolvs.d:g.magn.britann.franc.et.hib.rex., rev. crowned garnished square topped shield, date above, dividing cr crowned with diamond below, avspiciis.rex.magne.tvis 1630 preceded by small b ( C.f. Brooker, 1242-in gold; N.-:S.-) as struck, exceptionally well preserved, excessively rare Estimate £ 8,000-10,000 Provenance Pattern Unites by Nicolas Briot dated 1630 with the bare head within the inner circle are known in gold and silver. Montagu, 1896, had an example in gold, lot 389, reading hib, (later Murdoch 1903, lot 283, Brooker no.1242 and Selig 211), but no example in silver of this type existed in either Murdoch or Montagu. It is thought that this coin is the silver version of the Montagu/Murdoch/Brooker gold example and was struck from the same dies. Examples with the legend reading hibe are also known in gold (Montagu 1896, lot 390) and silver (Montagu 1896, lot 391).
