Wax study on slate of Victory crowning a monument to Nelson, by William Wyon, c.1830-40, winged Victory, loosly draped, standing, holding a palm in her left hand and crowning with a wreath a bust of Lord Nelson on a Naval pedestal inscribed Duncan, St Vincent, Howe, pale pink wax, the slate inscribed with concentric circles and faint traces of legend palmam qui meruit ferat around, overall diam. 75mm. Estimate £ 200-300 William Wyon was only ten at the time of Nelson´s death at Trafalgar in 1805. This wax model is presumably a proposed design for a later Naval Prize Medal. The size, style and even the faint pink colour of the wax, makes it very similar to the study of ´Flying Victory´ (lot 409). While the latter was adopted for the Jellalabad medal in 1841, this design does not appear to have been used. The legend, taken from Virgil, frequently used by Schools and Universities, was Nelson´s own motto and also the motto of the Royal Naval School in Camberwell, founded in 1833. For a bronze specimen of the School´s medal by Wyon see lot 420.
