Alexander II, Memorial Medal on his Death, 1881, gold medal by V. Alexeev and A. Griliches Jnr. head right, palm and radiant All Seeing Eye above, signed B.A. on truncation, rev. a grieving Russia kneels before a sarcophagus and places a wreath on the lid, ´designed by V.P Vereschagin, engraved by A. Griliches Jnr.´ below, 76mm., 299,55g, (Diakov 881-R5; Smirnov 830), hairlines on the proof-like fields, extremely fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 6,000-7,000 Assassinated on 1 March 1881 by a bomb thrown by the terrorist, I. Grinevitskij, Alexander II was buried alongside his predecessors near the north wall of the cathedral church of Saints Peter and Paul in St Petersburg. There are 32 tombs in the cathedral, all of white Cerrara marble except for those of Alexander and his wife Maria Alexandrova, which are of jasper and radonite.
