Italy, Tuscany, Florence, Leopoldo II di Lorena (1824-59), Fiorino, 1842, second type, 6.91g, head right, gn below, short titles : leop ii d g p r h et b a a m d etr, rev. ornate lily, quattrini cento 1842, fiorino below (Gig.35 (R5); Pag.-), flaw on edge (in the striking), pleasant grey-blue tone, much brilliance, nearly FDC and extremely rare - it is believed that only four specimens are known, of which two (including the present specimen) are in private hands; in superb condition, most desirable Estimate £ 3,000-4,000 Pagani only records a Fiorino dated 1842 for the first, young head issue. Gigante does records an 1842 Fiorino with the second head, as the present specimen, rating it R5 and unpriced, and states that only three examples are known (two of which are in museum collections). Gigante states that only a single specimen is known of this date for the third, old head with extended legend.
