Italy, Genoa, Biennial Doges, third coinage (1637-1797), AV 10-Doppie, 66.651g., 1641, cses, mint-master Cosmas Svarez, Madonna and Child seated on clouds, looking to her left, sceptre in right hand, cherubs holding crown of nine stars over, et rege eos 1641 c s es around, rev.cross pattée, lis in angles, pellet and fleur at end of each limb of the cross, four winged cherub heads opposite lis, + dvx et gvbernator es reip gen (CNI.III, 354/3; Fr.426; Lun.269; MIR.256/1 var. (but different mint-master); Nom.89A; Pesce & Felloni p.121), some weakness on two of the cherub´s head on the reverse, somewhat double struck, extremely fine, of extreme rarity - believed to be one of only three known specimens, a most impressive coin Estimate £ 40,000-50,000 An outstanding rarity and a most important discovery. Until the announcement of the existence of this piece it was believed there were only two examples known. One was sold by CNG, New York, on 11 January 2005, and realised $90,000 plus commission. Another specimen was sold by Santamaria in June 1956. This denomination was only struck for seven dates, all of which are rare.
