Colombia, Carlos III (1759-88), 8-Reales, 1770 VJ, Nuevo Reino (Bogota) , crowned arms dividing VJ - 8 between rosettes, titles around, rev. crowned globes between crowned pillars, mint-marks and date below, utraque unum over (Cal.-; Cay.-), original colour, much brilliance, virtually mint state, most appealing; this date unrecorded for this mint, exceedingly rare Estimate £ 18,000-25,000 Until now there has been no record of an 8 Reales from the mint of Nuevo Reino (Bogota) with this date. All issues from this mint under Carlos III are rare. 8 Reales have only been recorded from 1760-63, with JV mintmaster´s initials, and all are extremely rare. The only coins so far recorded from Nuevo Reino with VJ initials are 1/2 and 1 Reales of 1772-3, and 2 Reales of 1772-5. This and the following coin are additionally in absolutely superb condition, virtually as struck, this in itself extremely rare for this popular type coin.
