Frere, Norfolk Regiment ´For services in connection with the Operations in Mesopotamia from 6th November 1914 up to 14th April 1915´ Major Robert Temple Frere, born November 1889; Commissioned Second Lieutenant, Norfolk Regiment, 6.11.1909; Promoted Lieutenant, 10.7.1912; served in India and stationed at Belgaum at the outbreak of the Great War; left for the Persian Gulf, 6.11.1914; served in the Mesopotamian Campaign with the 2nd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment, 18th Indian Brigade, 6th (Poona) Division; took part in the action at Kurna, December 1914; wounded in the attack on the Turkish positions at Shaiba, 14.4.1915: ´The main body of the enemy had been located in well-sited trenches near Barjisiyeh. When the Battalion got to within 350 yards, they suffered heavy casualties and found themselves held up by the intense rifle and machine-gun fire...They were ordered to hold firm where they were. At 3:00 p.m. orders were received that the trenches must be taken "at all costs." The Battalion charged forward cheering. The charge was more than the Turks could stand; they fled from their trenches before the Norfolk men could reach them.´ (Regimental history refers).
