A Prisoner of War Memento A loose-leaf notebook with green card covers (now faded to buff), the outside inscribed in manuscript J.H. KING 1091/CIGARETTES/Christmas 1940, the inside stamped Stalag/ XXI R/ Geprüft, containing 538 different cigarette-papers from 30 different countries, posted to prisoners of war, with a note at the end listing these countries and the number of cigarette-papers provided by each, the top scorers being Holland with 99, Belgium with 84 and the UK with 71 (back cover detached but present) See illustration Note: This collection was assembled by Captain King, who, as an Army chaplain, had more freedom of movement than other PoWs during his five years of captivity, and was able to obtain the cigarette-papers from fellow-inmates of different nationalities. He kept a diary (now in the Imperial War Museum) which he published after the war as a book entitled "Thank You Padre". Estimate £ 250-350
