Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque ´Charles Samuel Greenwood´, mounted in a circular wooden frame; together with Mercantile Marine War Medal (Denis Herlihy), very fine and a Masonic Medal for Tynwald Lodge 1242, silver-gilt (Hallmarks for London 1905), reverse engraved ´Presented to Bro. R.J. Grindley. P.M. Tynwald Lodge 1242 as a token of esteem for his services as Secretary Jan. 10. 1906´, in George Kenning & Son box of issue (3) Estimate £ 50-60 17563 Rifleman Charles Samuel Greenwood, born Islington, London; served during the Great War with the 7th (Service) Battalion Rifle Brigade on the Western Front, and was killed in action on the Somme 15.9.1916, ´Attacked 8am (15/9) - Gap Trench close to Flers taken and ground held. Relieved at midnight and into reserve at Delville. Casualties -267´ (British Battalions on the Somme, R. Westlake refers); Greenwood is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Denis Herlihy, born Cork, Ireland; served as a Trimmer in S.S. Ardmore (Cork), Merchant Navy, and was killed in action, 13.11.1917 when S.S. Ardmore and S.S. Carlo were both sunk by a U-boat off Coningberg Light - 21 hands were lost, they are all commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial.
