R.E.), generally good very fine (5) Estimate £ 160-180 5172885 Sergeant Master Shoemaker Albert Edward Bowler, born Newcastle-upon-Tyne, May 1879; enlisted in the Somerset Light Infantry for a period of 7 years with the Colours, 19.4.1898; served in South Africa 4.11.1899-3.5.1900; promoted Lance Corporal, 30.1.1905; service extended to 12 years with the Colours, 1.2.1905; Corporal, 13.2.1907; qualified as Shoemaker, Royal Army Clothing Department, June 1908; transferred to the 1st Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 8.6.1908; Sergeant Shoemaker, 12.6.1908; served in Malta, 15.4.1909-20.12.1912; re-engaged so as to complete 21 years with the Colours, 9.7.1909; transferred to the 1st Battalion, Warwickshire Regiment, 2.1.1913; Served with the British Expeditionary Force in France, 22.8.1914-10.7.1915 (returned to England having contracted Synovitis of the right knee, 6.7.1915); transferred to the Royal Engineers, 10.3.1916; Served on the Western Front, 14.3.1916-18.2.1919; Awarded Long Service & G.C. Medal, 22.11.1916; Company Quarter Master Sergeant, 6.6.1917; appointed Acting Company Sergeant Major, 16.11-23.12.1918; Discharged 18.4.1919 after 21 years with the Colours; Enlisted in the 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, and appointed Sergeant Master Shoemaker, 8.8.1919; Discharged 7.8.1923. His Adjutant at the time of his discharge wrote: ´He had an exemplary character whilst in the Army. He has been Sergeant Shoemaker for fifteen years, and is excellent at his job. He is absolutely reliable, and an excellent man in every way. I am very sorry indeed to lose him.´
