London Gazette 19.2.1917 No.2434 Cadet E. Partridge, 24th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. ´I have been requested by the General Officer Commanding, Eastern Command, to present the Military Medal to No.2434 Cadet E. Partridge, 24th Bn. Royal Fusiliers. On November 13th 1916, at Beaumont Hamel, when the 24th Royal Fusiliers formed the left flank of their Division, the Division on their left failed to withstand the German attack, and exposed the left flank of the Royal Fusiliers with its left Company in danger of being isolated and cut off. Cadet Partridge on this day was Battalion Runner, and on this day and two days following maintained communications from Battalion Headquarters, with their left Company, and with the right Company of the flank Battalion. It was due to his courage and determination, in the transmission of messages under very heavy fire, that the line was reformed and consolidated. Signed: E.S.T. Shaw, Lt.Col. Commanding No. 15 (Artists Rifles) Officer Cadet Bn. 8.12.1917´ (Copy of letter included in lot refers). Second Lieutenant E. Partridge, M.M., was commissioned Temporary Second Lieutenant Royal Fusiliers, 1.5.1918, having previously served during the Great War in the ranks of the 24th Battalion of the Regiment, including on the 13th November 1916 on the Somme (see above), when his battalion were part of the ´Attack on Beaumont Trench (13/11) - at 5.15 am moved out in thick fog into No Man´s Land - operation successful - 5th Brigade taking all of its objectives along with many prisoners´ (British Battalions on the Somme, R. Westlake, refers); between the front of Beaumont-Hamel and St. Pierre Divion, 3,300 German prisoners were taken that day.
