x Switzerland, a silver (?) plate, 225 mm. (8 3/4 in.) diameter, inlaid with 9 gold and 30 silver Swiss coins, the base engraved switzerland in a curve above the central coin, and with the maker´s name and address against the lower edge; in the in the outer ring 5-Francs (4) of 1874, 1892, 1909, 1922, and shooting Talers (5 Francs) of Zurich, 1859 (2), and Fribourg, 1881, all alternating with 2-Francs (8) of 1860 (2), 1874, 1875 (2), 1878, 1886, and 1921; the inner ring consisting of alternating 1-Franc (8), of 1850, 1851 (2), 1861 (2), 1876 (2), 1887, and 1/2-Franc (6) of 1850, 1851, 1879, 1907, 1908, 1920, all convex; the innermost ring consisting of 8 gold coins - alternating 20-Francs (4) of 1890, 1900, 1901, 1902, and 10-Francs (4) of 1911, 1913, 1915 (2), around a pattern 20 Francs, 1873 in the centre, the plate and coins acid cleaned giving the coins an etched and polished appearance, otherwise good very fine to extremely fine, the last rare; the plate in good order, a few minor scratches on the base (39) Estimate £ 1,200-1,500 provenance; Property of the Emperor Hailé Selassie, Puttock & Simpson, London, 21 December 1936, lot 49. One of a collection of 24 similar plates from coins of different countries ( 2 from Ethiopia), made by the Goldsmiths´ and Silversmiths´ Co. 112 Regent St. London W1., all offered in the same sale. The coins within the inner ring have been carefully shaped to align with the curve of the bowl. The plate is presumably silver but lacks a hall-mark. Together with a copy of the sale catalogue (1 plate, from Ethiopia, illustrated).
