El-Hadji Abd-El-Kader (1807-83), white metal portrait medal by Jean François.Antoine Bovy, robed bust three quarters left, rev. inscription in 16 lines within decorative border, crescent above, date 1862 below, 75mm., very fine, rare Estimate £ 60-80 Abd-el-Kader led the resistance to the French 1834-47 and is regarded as the founder of modern Algeria. This medal is complimentary, the reverse inscription refers to the ´ Jugurtha moderne´ , gives him the titles ´Émir de l´Afique du Nord, Défenseur de la Nationalité Arabe, Protecteur des Chrétiens Opprimés´ and concludes ´.La France qu´il a combattu l´aime et l´admire´.
