(ME.186; cf.NP.1092), extremely fine, rare Estimate £ 150-200 The Byzantine church of Hagia Sophia was converted to a mosque by Fatih Sultan Mehmed (the Conqueror) after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453. The fabric was repaired many times over the centuries. The major repairs commemorated by this medal were carried out under the direction of the architect Gaspar Fosatti and took two years to complete. The mosque was reopened for prayers in 1849.
