Edward IV, light ´cross and pellets´ coinage, 1473-1478, Groat, 1.83g., m.m. slipped trefoil on reverse, Waterford, bust crowned within a tressure of nine arches, unclear obverse mintmark, saltire stops, no marks by neck or on breast, [..]wrdvs dns gra dns[...], legend error reading dns for dei, rev. long cross with a trefoil each of three pellets in each quarter, with an additional saltire in second and fourth quarters, civitas waterford (c.f. S.6345), clipped, very fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 600-800 This Waterford groat is most unusual on three counts: it uses the rarely found slipped trefoil mint mark; it lacks any of the usual marks found on the breast and in the obverse field and it contains a die makers error in the obverse legend. Its weight indicates this is a light issue Groat and the quality of strike rules out its being a contemporary copy. All these factors make this coin a very rare and most interesting addition to the Corpus of Edward IV Irish Groats.
