Hiberno Norse, Phase V, 1065-1095, late imitation types, Penny, 0.97g., inner circle divided by a line, with an annulet at the centre, from which extend four paired croziers, saltire, with each pair linked at the head by an inverted crescent, four angles outside croziers, three of which contain a single pellet and the other a trefoil of three pellets, blundered legend around, rev. inner circle with cross derived from profile right types of William I and William II, single pellet in two alternate quarters and trefoil of three pellets in the other quarters (DF.30; S.6163 variant), most unusual and apparently an unpublished type, flatness around parts of legend, otherwise very fine and extremely rare Estimate £ 900-1,100 provenance Bt.
